Ranging
from the wonderful Loons that are emblematic of the north woods to tiny
hummingbirds that travel thousands of miles to return to us every summer,
northern Michigan is blessed with a bird population that is interesting
and varied. The number and variety of species we see in the Interlochen
area is truly amazing. Stop in at the Bird's Nest and pick up a bird house
handmade by local craftsmen. They range from the simple to the sublime,
but all are functional and make a functional decoration for your yard
or home.
While you're here, you can learn about Saving
Birds Through Habitat, a wonderful foundation based in Leelanau county
devoted to protecting and restoring the habitat that provides sheltered
for North American birds.
 "Study
after study has shown that habitat loss and degradation are the primary
threats to healthy bird populations. Nothing else comes close. That's
why I am such a strong supporter of Saving Birds Thru Habitat and its
programs that teach so many people how to improve habitats for birds."
Dr. Gregory Butcher,
Director of Bird Conservation National Audubon Society
The Bird's Nest also features the creations of
Martin Tuchbaum, a local artisan. He is responsible for the brightly
painted bird "condo" in the yard as well as many of the other interesting
things you will see. If you're lucky, you might catch him at the Bird's
Nest carving or shaping or sometimes just looking at a piece of wood
visualizing what lies within it. Ask him what he's doing and he will be
glad to tell you and brighten your day a bit.
