CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE

Located high atop one of the most picturesque settings on Michigan's Old Mission Peninsula sits the winery and vineyards of Chateau Grand Traverse. Founded in 1974 by Edward O'Keefe, the family-owned and operated winery is the oldest and largest commercial winery and vineyard operation in Northern Michigan.
Chateau Grand Traverse focuses its emphasis on ten key European vinifera grape varieties including Johannisberg Riesling, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, and Gewürztraminer. Their 100% European vinifera vineyards marked the first commercial planting of these premium grape varieties in our State.

The Earth and Hearth offers a selection of Chateau Grand Traverse wines. Among our favorites are the Ship of Fools, and Johannisberg Riesling. Give them a try.

This crisp dry white wine was especially made to accompany food. It was produced from premium late-picked grapes from our oldest estate vineyards. It is steely dry with ripe apple, pear and lime flavors. Serve slightly chilled with fresh oysters and mussels, smoked fish, cream sauces as well as sliced apples and melted brie.

2004 Ship of Fools White Table Wine
This wine is a whole-cluster pressed blend of 42% Pinot Gris, 38% Pinot Blanc and 20% Chardonnay. It is reminiscent of the crisp and aromatic off-dry white wines of the Friuli Region of Northeastern Italy. This wine is intended for those who prefer their dry white wine without oak.

Chateau Grand Traverse Inn
In addition to maintaining one of the most successful wineries in Michigan, Chateau Grand Traverse also operates an inn at the same location as their winery on Old Mission Peninsula. This stunning, six guest room facility is perched high on a hill overlooking vineyards and orchards with spectacular views of Grand Traverse Bay. The Inn's décor and character create a restful adult atmosphere. It is highly recommended as a wonderful place to spend a couple of days relaxing, enjoying the northern Michigan views, and sampling the wine.

CHATEAU ST. JEAN

Just an hour north of San Francisco, Chateau St. Jean represents the best of Sonoma wine country. Nestled like jewels at the center of Chateau St. Jean, "The Chateau" and gardens convey the beauty and grace that distinguish both the winery and its Sonoma County wines. In 1920, "The Chateau" was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff, and their children. The family, originally from Saginaw, Michigan, made its fortune in iron mines there, and in lumber in the Pacific Northwest. The 250 acres of land that is home to Chateau St. Jean vineyards were initially planted with white grapes. Prohibition curtailed grape growing, however, and the family opted to grow prunes and walnuts instead.

When Chateau St. Jean was established in 1973, the decision was made to preserve the Goff legacy. "The Chateau" was fully restored and opened to the public. It has since been listed in the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The fishponds in the shape of Lakes Michigan and Huron, and the arched footbridge, delight visitors just as they did 80 years ago.

2002 Merlot California
For those of you who like a full-bodied wine, the Chateau St. Jean California Merlot is a favorite, reasonably priced, and well worth a try.
The Vineyards
Crafted with the idea of an everyday drinking wine that is rich in flavor and highly accessible in mind, this inaugural release showcases California Merlot with a classic Chateau St. Jean signature - big fruit intensity. We selected fruit from two California coastal areas where Merlot grows best- the North Coast (79%) and the Central Coast (21%) to blend this wine. North Coast vineyards in Sonoma, Napa, Lake and Mendocino Counties give the wine a solid backbone that is nicely balanced with firm tannins and forward fruit flavors of black fruits. Central Coast vineyards in Paso Robles and Santa Maria bring fleshy tannins and ripe fruit flavors of plum and black cherries.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of black fruits dominate with notable hints of plum on the nose. Rich, ripe and forward with big fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry are backed by a slight hint of mint and subtle notes of roasted meat. Lush and fleshy tannins gently surround the fruit to a satisfying finish.

BAREFOOT WINE

Founded in 1986, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey introduced Barefoot Cellars wines. "We loved the name and the concept of being barefoot and living the carefree lifestyle," stated Harvey. They launched the brand with two varietals, Barefoot California Cabernet Sauvignon and Barefoot California Sauvignon Blanc.

In early 1992, Barefoot Chardonnay was added to the Barefoot repertoire and Barefoot White Zinfandel in late 1993. The wines were recognized by awards, acclaimed wine writers and repeat customers.

Since its inception, Grape Links, Inc. has supported a multitude of non-profit and charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society, Sonoma County Boys and Girls Club, Ducks Unlimited, Sonoma County Land Trust, California State Parks Foundation, Project Open Hand, Shakespeare in the Park, Sonoma County Task Force of the Homeless, Face to Face, Girl Scouts, and local Police and Fire Departments.

Barefoot wines offer a reasonably priced alternative for distinct quality wines. Like they say, "Get Barefoot and Have a Great Time!"
